An exchange, also known as a crypto exchange or currency exchange, is a platform where you can buy and sell cryptocurrency. Think of it as a bank account, but specifically for crypto: you deposit euros into your account at the exchange, place a buy order and the exchange executes it for you.

How does an exchange work in practice?

Say you want to buy € 500 worth of Bitcoin. You give the exchange that order and it executes the transaction. The exchange takes € 500 plus transaction fees from your euro balance at the exchange and credits the corresponding amount of Bitcoin to your Bitcoin balance. Does the price rise afterwards and do you want to lock in the profit? Then you place a sell order. The exchange sells the Bitcoin, withholds its transaction fees and credits the amount in euros to your euro balance. You can always freely transfer the balance on your euro account at the exchange to your own IBAN account at a bank, your money is never locked in.
